In the GDR, the appearance of the P 8 conversion, after the installation of the Giesl flat ejector, was called "Quetschesse" by the staff. During performance test runs at a speed of 50 km/h, a coal saving of 14% was proven compared to the locomotive with a standard suction draught system. In 1966 and 1967, 75 locomotives were rebuilt in the "Einheit" Leipzig workshop. Their use was limited to the three Reichsbahn directorates of Cottbus, Erfurt and Magdeburg. They were deployed from there, mostly in passenger transport with reconditioned carriages and other types of carriages.
