The Deutsche Reichsbahn feared that they would be able to keep fewer and fewer locomotives available for the express trains due to the sometimes poor condition of the class 01. Therefore, it was decided to reconstruct the 01, which at the Reichsbahn also meant an increase in performance and the elimination of errors, and that was particularly successful with this series. The new welded boiler got a third safety valve. All boiler superstructures were clad, the driver's cab modernized and the Witte smoke deflectors beveled at the front. Because the coupled wheel sets had to be replaced due to broken spokes, some locomotives were fitted with cast steel Boxpok wheels. This made the Reko-01 one of the most powerful express train steam locomotives of the post-war period.
