The steam locomotives, known as "Jumbo" because of their pulling power, were used with great success in almost all of Germany and in many other European countries. The maximum speed forward was 80 km/h, and they could travel backwards at 50 km/h. Some of these already very powerful machines saw a further increase in power to 2,100 hp (1,546 kW) at the German Federal Railway when they were converted to oil firing in 1955. The DB's oil-fired locomotives were designated series 043 from 1968.
