The Royal Prussian State Railway put the G 8.1 D-coupled superheated steam locomotive into service in 1913. With approximately 5,200 units built, this locomotive type was probably the most widely produced freight steam locomotive. Robustly built and powerful, the BR 5525-56 locomotives, as they were designated from the end of the 1920s, were in service with both German and some European railway authorities until well after the Second World War. The DB only retired the last of these locomotives in 1972.
