Tender locomotive BR A3 4-6-2 60078 'Night Hawk', epoch IV
Whilst the A1 was a fantastic locomotive that served its purpose as intended, it became apparent relatively quickly that a number of changes could be made which would greatly improve its performance. However, these modifications were too significant to avoid a reclassification of the locomotives and as such the A1 Felstead 2743 was the first to be built just a handful of years after its introduction from its shed in August 1928 as the first A3 'Super Pacific.'
The newly designated A3 locomotives had an improved boiler, larger cylinders and a right-to-left conversion. 27 of the series were built from the start as A3 locomotives, with all pre-1950 A1 examples in service having been rebuilt. The last specimen to undergo this conversion was the BR 60068 Sir Visto.
The Night Hawk first entered LNER service on October 24, 1924 as locomotive #2577 as the A1. The locomotive was converted to an A3 in January 1944 and given the number 78 and then 60078 under BR. Night Hawk was retired on 22 October 1962 making it almost a fine 38 years before she was scrapped at Doncaster in 1963.
