Note on the minimum radius of the BR 01: The models of the BR 01 steam locomotive are technically suitable for operation from a minimum radius of R 360 mm. For optimal driving characteristics, we recommend using from R 420 mm.
Information about the prototype
Parallel to the 01 series, the German Reichsbahn developed the closely related 02 series. In a direct comparison between the two-cylinder twin design (BR 01) and the four-cylinder compound design (BR 02), tests were carried out in everyday operation at the Erfurt, Hamm P and Hof depots from 1925 onwards to determine which locomotive series was more suitable for the German Reichsbahn. Due to design defects in the steam paths of the machine, the BR 02 could not fully exploit the advantages of compound technology compared to the BR 01. The additionally higher ongoing maintenance costs ultimately led to the decision to give preference to the BR 01 in series production. The 10 BR 02 locomotives were converted into BR 01 locomotives between 1937 and 1942 in the Reichsbahn repair shop in Meiningen and renumbered as 01 011 (ex 02 001) and 01 233-241 (ex 02 002-010). All 10 locomotives were in service with the Deutsche Bundesbahn in this condition. The last to be decommissioned was 001 234-4 in 1972 in the Hof depot.
