This type of steam locomotive was the most powerful tender locomotive ever purchased by the German Reichsbahn Company. A total of 45 of these gigantic machines were built. It was nicknamed the "Mountain Queen" due to its predominant use on the Sonneberg-Probstzella railway lines, the Spessartrampe, the Frankenwaldbahn, the Geislinger Steige, the Schiefen Ebene and the Rübelandbahn. After the Second World War, 31 locomotives of the series were transferred to the Deutsche Reichsbahn. In the 1950s, the boiler equipment, fittings, pumps, driver's cab, etc. were adapted to the DR's practices during maintenance and thus largely standardized. Between 1966 and 1972, 24 machines were converted to oil-fired main firing, and 10 locomotives were given a new boiler without a feed dome. The Eisfeld-Sonneberg railway line was the last area of operation. The last machines were not decommissioned until 1981.
