With the expansion of the Passau-Wels line for 20 tons of axle pressure, the powerful three-cylinder locomotives of the 44 series could also be used in Austria from 1938. They were indispensable for the heavy, especially long, block trains from West Germany to the Linz steelworks. Ore trains from Hieflau were also transported from Amstetten to Linz. After World War II, some locomotives continued to operate. Because of the extensive maintenance, however, they were soon shut down.
