The Deutsche Reichsbahn series 95 includes steam locomotives that were built between 1922 and 1924 by the manufacturers Borsig and Hanomag. Originally ordered as the Prussian type T20, they were given the series number 95 in 1925. Despite the original plan to use these locomotives for rack operation on steep routes, they were mainly used in freight train and push-pull operations on mountain routes due to their high weight, which earned them the nickname "Mountain Queen".
After the Second World War, 12 locomotives remained in West Germany and were used by the German Federal Railway until 1957. These were scrapped by 1959. The locomotives continued to be used in the GDR and 24 machines were converted to oil firing in Meiningen in the 1960s. The scheduled use of the last locomotives ended in 1981. Some machines, including the 95 016 and 95 027, were preserved for museum and heritage purposes and are still operational today. Preserved locomotives are owned by museums and railway associations, among others.
