WHAT HAPPENED IF...?
… The next winter is sure to come!
Since the beginning of the railway era, it has been necessary to clear the tracks when it snows or drifts. The spectrum of railway service vehicles ranges from simple snow plows to large snow plows and high-performance snow blowers.
From the 1960s, the Deutsche Bundesbahn needed to replace the old, steam-powered snow blowers. Various heavy-duty compact vehicles with Beilhack diesel snow blower units were tested in the Alps, in the Allgäu and abroad. A disadvantage of these vehicles was the use of an additional locomotive for the propulsion.
To make snow clearing even more efficient, a self-propelled high-performance snow blower was developed. This allowed snow depths of up to 3 meters to be mastered. This would have prepared you well for any unpredictable weather. However, after extensive test drives, series delivery to the Deutsche Bundesbahn was delayed until the early 1990s.
