These cars were built from 1951 to 1963, with only one significant change during that time, the replacement of the bogies in the final stages of the Mark 1 build cycle. The Mark 1 car, as it came to be known, was designed as a "jack of all trades", combining the best features of the four large cars the company had inherited.
These cars continued in service in one form or another in the UK until 2010, when the Mark One-based Class 421 was withdrawn from service on the Lymington Branch Line.
