The Mark 1 wagon, as it was later called, was designed as a "jack of all trades", incorporating the best qualities of the four big cars the company had inherited. The Mark One carriages were stronger than the designs they replaced and their introduction was praised in railway safety reports. These coaches were in service in one form or another in the UK until 2010 when the Mark One based Class 421 was phased out on the Lymington Branch Line.
