3-pc. Postal train set of the DB, epoch III
The set consists of an express train postal car (Hechtwagen) of the Deutsche Bundespost, class Post4ü-a17, a boxcar with brakeman's cab, class Grhs 31 and a boxcar, class Glmhs 50.
The postal administrations used the railway to transport the postal items early on in the history of the railway. The rail mail wagons were either installed individually in passenger trains or added in larger numbers as part of express and freight trains with postal transport.
In the post-war period, the postal trains were shaped by the carriage material of the former Deutsche Reichspost and were formed between large node stations. Such mail trains consisted of wagons which, depending on the type of construction, were used to transport letters or parcels. The mail was not only transported in the rail mail wagons but was sorted while the train was still traveling. Mail items that had already been pre-sorted and were only distributed further at the destination station were transported in covered freight cars - mostly rented by the DB, sometimes also own wagons of the Deutsche Bundespost.
