Starting in the mid-1950s, the Deutsche Bundesbahn developed the so-called n-cars as modern commuter railcars to address the wartime shortage of cars. The first prototypes were built in 1958, followed by three basic types for different purposes. For series production, stainless steel cladding with a peacock eye pattern was used, which earned the cars the nickname "Silberlinge" (Silverlings). The design was so successful that around 5,000 units were built between 1960 and 1980 – with optimized entrances and modern bogies for quick passenger boarding and improved driving characteristics.
