From the mid-1950s onwards, the Deutsche Bundesbahn developed the so-called n-cars as modern local transport vehicles to remedy the war-related car shortage. The first prototypes were built in 1958, followed by three basic types for different purposes. For series production, stainless steel cladding with a peacock eye pattern was used, which earned the cars the nickname "Silberlinge" (Silverlings). The design was so successful that around 5,000 examples were built between 1960 and 1980 – with optimized entrances and modern bogies for quick passenger changes and better driving characteristics.
