From the mid-1950s onwards, the Deutsche Bundesbahn developed the so-called n-cars as modern commuter railcars to remedy the wartime car shortage. The first prototypes were built in 1958, followed by three basic types for different purposes. For series production, stainless steel cladding with a peacock eye pattern was used, which earned the cars the nickname "Silberlinge" (Silver Locomotives). The design was so successful that around 5,000 examples were built between 1960 and 1980 – with optimized entrances and modern bogies for quick passenger boarding and improved driving characteristics.
