The first prototypes of the n-cars were developed in 1958 to meet the growing volume of traffic and to replace the limited service life of the 3yg cars. The n-cars consisted of three basic types: one car with five 1st class compartments and two 2nd class open spaces (AB4nb), one with three 2nd class open spaces (B4nb) and one with two 2nd class open spaces and a luggage compartment with driver's cab (BD4nf). Various materials such as aluminum and steel were tested in the prototypes, but stainless steel (V2A) was chosen for series production. Due to the corrosion resistance of stainless steel, there was no need for painting, and the cars were sanded with a "peacock eye" pattern below the windows. This silver surface quickly earned the n-cars the nickname "Silberlinge" (silver ones).
