In 1958, the growing demand in traffic volumes and the limited service life of the 3yg cars led to the development of the n cars. Based on earlier prototypes, three main types with different interior layouts were developed: carriages with 1st class compartments and 2nd class open-plan spaces, carriages with only 2nd class open-plan spaces, and a model with open-plan spaces and a luggage compartment. Various materials such as aluminum and steel were tested on the prototypes, but stainless steel (V2A) was ultimately chosen, which offered greater corrosion resistance. The peacock eye pattern that was ground into the stainless steel sheet below the windows quickly earned the carriages the nickname "Silberlinge" (silver ones).
