The basic design of the n-cars proved to be very successful between 1960 and 1980, so that around 5000 cars were built by various manufacturers and in the repair shops in Karlsruhe and Hanover. Initially, however, there were problems with the cramped driver's cabs of the BD4nf, which were quickly nicknamed "rabbit box" by the employees and led to dissatisfaction and safety concerns. In response to this, the driver's cab was redesigned in the Karlsruhe repair shop from 1972 onwards to create a control car with a full driver's cab without the possibility of transition to the next car. This change led to a clear demarcation of the so-called Karlsruhe head in comparison to the previous rabbit box design.
