The basic design of the n-cars proved very successful between 1960 and 1980, resulting in the construction of around 5,000 cars by various manufacturers and at the Karlsruhe and Hanover repair shops. Initially, however, there were problems with the cramped driver's cabs of the BD4nf, which quickly earned the nickname "rabbit hutch" from staff, leading to dissatisfaction and safety concerns. In response, the driver's cab was redesigned at the Karlsruhe repair shop starting in 1972, creating a control car with a fully functional driver's cab and no connecting passage to the next car. This change resulted in a clear distinction between the so-called "Karlsruhe head" and the previous "rabbit hutch" design.
