INFORMATION ABOUT THE ROLE MODEL

From the mid-1950s onwards, the Deutsche Bundesbahn responded to the shortage of wagons with conversion programs for 3yg and 4yg wagons. Initially, city rapid transit and express train cars were developed, only then were local transport cars (n-cars) created. The need for n-cars increased due to the limited service life of the 3yg, and the first prototypes were created in 1958. Based on previous developments, three basic types emerged.

The n-cars were made of stainless steel (V2A), with a peacock eye pattern and a silver surface, hence the nickname “Silberlinge”. Bogies of the Minden-Deutz type were equipped with block brakes (MD42), which were later replaced by disc brakes (MD43). Double entrances with revolving doors were introduced for quick passenger changes.

Between 1960 and 1980, around 5,000 n-cars were built by various manufacturers and in the repair shops in Karlsruhe and Hanover. The BD4nf driver's cabs were initially cramped and were converted into control cars with a full-fledged driver's cab at the Aw Karlsruhe in 1972. Modernization began in the 1980s with the new Hanover design, mint green paint and plastic frames for translation windows.

Control cars were redesigned in the Aw Wittenberge, based on the DB standard driver's cab of the BR 111. Many rabbit boxes and Karlsruhe heads were converted into Wittenberg heads. DB AG also integrated normal 2nd class carriages into the conversion program to meet the need for push-pull trains.
