Witte's new locomotives
The last steam locomotives of the German Federal Railway and their creators 1949 - 1977
210 x 297 mm
When the German Federal Railway was founded in 1949, the end of steam traction was already foreseeable. Nevertheless, the DB acquired five steam locomotive series by 1959. These machines were the work of Friedrich Witte (1900 - 1977) from the Federal Railway Central Office in Minden, who had held the office of "design officer" for steam locomotives at the old Reichsbahn since 1942. He kept this job at the Federal Railway until 1965 and is therefore considered the "father of the new locomotives".
This richly illustrated review of the life and work of the railwayman who developed the "Witte smoke deflectors" and made the "Super Pacifics" of the 01.10 series operational at the Federal Railway is a worthy monument to the life's work of Friedrich Witte.
