The E 50 series - standard electric locomotive for heavy freight service
With a nominal output of 4,500 kW and six axles, the E 50 series was the most powerful and longest standard locomotive series. 194 units were built by 1973, and the last of them ended service in 2003. Two locomotives have been preserved as museum pieces.
Even though the E 50s are standard electric locomotives, they were never completely uniform. The subtle differences in the locomotives' appearance are shown in a separate chapter.
When the first machines were built, there were only electrified routes in southern Germany. As the electrical network expanded northwards, the area of use and the number of locomotives in service also grew. This connection is shown in the chronicle of the E 50 series, but also the decline in the years around the turn of the millennium.
A complete stationing list of all E 50s is available, as well as a description of how the locomotives were used by the home depots.
