Due to the shortage of freight train locomotives in the First World War, the Prussian G 12 was converted into the 1'D locomotive of the G 8.3 type by omitting a coupled axle and a boiler shot. 85 of these were built and later entered the DRG fleet as the series 561. The not particularly popular three-cylinder engine with its derived internal control was abandoned after a short time in favor of a two-cylinder engine and the locomotives were put into service under the designation G 8.2. 846 locomotives of this type were built. The Reichsbahn designated it as 56.20-29. Both types were used by both German railway administrations, sometimes even until the early 1970s.
The locomotives were not only used in Germany, but also in Poland, the Soviet Union and Romania, and as replicas in Turkey. The licensed models for Turkey were even used as planned until 1990. Hans-Jürgen Wenzel has created a well-deserved literary monument in the EK series library for the closely related Prussian types, which were also purchased by the LBE and the Oldenburg State Railways.
