On December 1st, 1838, the first German state railway began operations. First to Wolfenbüttel, then to Bad Harzburg. Further new lines were built. The railway facilities were literally bursting at the seams and it was urgently necessary to carry out a fundamental expansion of the transport facilities. Concrete work only began in the 1940s. The end of the war in 1945 left the city of Brunswick in its wake and the construction field railways used for the earthworks were quickly used to clear the rubble. The new through station was inaugurated in 1960.
The Brunswick State Railway, the Brunswick-Schöninger Railway and the tram and bus companies, as well as the Büssing buses, also belong to the history of transport. In the 1930s, a modern canal port with a rail connection and its own railway operation was built.
