Burkhard Beyer
Old masters of railway photography: Ludwig Rotthowe
The well-known photographer from Westphalia
144 pages with 187 images
260 x 215 mm

The photographer Ludwig Rotthowe, who died on October 18, 2017 at the age of 80, is one of the most important and significant railway photographers in Germany. At the age of 15, he began an apprenticeship as a photographer in his hometown of Telgte, and in the same year he took his first railway photos. Inspired by the railway landscape photography of Toni Schneiders and Jean-Michael Hartmann, for example, Ludwig Rotthowe soon developed his own, unmistakable style of photography, which shows the railway in the landscape in the play of light and shadow.

Ludwig Rotthowe was particularly interested in the railway operations in his immediate surroundings in Westphalia and captured them in countless photographs. As early as the 1970s, he was able to present a selection of his work in his own illustrated book, which was published by Eisenbahn-Kurier under the title "Steam Locomotive Romance in Westphalia" and has long been out of print. The trained master photographer Ludwig Rotthowe cannot be missing from the established EK book series "Old Masters of Railway Photography". Burkhard Beyer paints a detailed picture of the Westphalian photographer, whose life's work is one of the most important examples of masterful railway photography.
