In the 1970s, the GDR's wagon manufacturing industry produced almost exclusively for export. The DR (East German State Railway) therefore had to look elsewhere to replace its aging fleet and have more vehicles available for the increased transport demands. Partially, this was remedied by the production of new wagons in its own repair shops, but this technology was not suitable for special-purpose wagons.
At the beginning of the 1970s, the Ministry of Foreign Trade succeeded in concluding extensive barter agreements with France, as a result of which approximately 20,000 new freight wagons of various types were delivered. From 1975 onwards, 1250 four-axle mineral oil tank wagons were delivered, classified under documentation number 8105 and type Uahs. Their numbering began at 727 0000. The wagon had a welded underframe made of St 52-3 steel without a center longitudinal beam, with Y25Cs type bogies and a split drawbar. The five-compartment tank, made of 7 mm steel plate (9 mm in the floor area), had a volume of 85,150 liters, thus allowing full utilization of the then-maximum permissible axle load of 20 t. The KE-GP type compressed air brake with brake rod adjuster and mechanical load-dependent braking was supplemented by a platform-operated handbrake and represented the state of the art at the time. The wagons were primarily used in unit trains and served mainly for the transport of fuels such as gasoline and diesel. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, this type of wagon was the most frequently used tank wagon by the DB (German Federal Railway).
