The NSB Rps wagons were built at Strømmens Værksted and NSB Verksted Kvaleberg, Stavanger, between 1970 and 1980, with a total production of 550 units.
The wagons were originally designated Rgps with running numbers starting from 393 1000. Later, the designation was changed to Rps.
