In the 1980s, the CSD and the DR decided to procure dual-system locomotives in order to simplify the steadily growing traffic and the operational processes in cross-border traffic on the Berlin – Dresden – Prague route.
The locomotive builder in the GDR, the LEW Hennigsdorf, was at full capacity at this time, so that the Czech locomotive factory Skoda, which already had various experiences with such machines, received the order. The CSD series ES 499.1 and 499.2 offered themselves as a basis. However, the German electricity system 15 kV / 16⅔ Hz was breaking new ground. The double order included 15 BR 372 locomotives for the CSD and 20 BR 230 locomotives for the DR.
The universal machines were used in passenger and freight train traffic. With an hourly output of 3,260 kW, a top speed of 120 km / h is achieved. In Germany the series is affectionately called "dumpling press", the Czech counterpart is called "bastard" in the neighboring country.
