After the two prototypes of the Ge 6/6 II series delivered in 1957 proved to be very successful, five more locomotives of this series were delivered in 1965. They differed from the prototypes, which had three, mainly by their two large front windows. Over the years, a number of changes and modifications were made to the locomotives, the most noticeable being the red paintwork from the mid-1980s. From the turn of the millennium, single-arm pantographs were installed instead of the scissor pantographs, which had become standard on the RhB. In recent years, these impressive machines have been used almost exclusively in freight transport, but have since been retired.
