The Italian State Railways (FS) purchased a total of 9 diesel multiple units of the ALn 442/448 series from the Italian manufacturer Breda for high-quality passenger train traffic on diesel routes. Until 1972 they were mainly used as a replacement for locomotive-hauled TEE trains. Food and drinks were prepared in a specially built-in on-board kitchen and served to passengers directly at their seats due to the lack of a restaurant area. After use as TEE, the trains were converted, with the galley removed and seats installed in place of these, hence the designation also changed to ALn 448/460. These were used as express trains, especially in southern Italy. The ALn were very popular with passengers, especially because of their high level of comfort and short travel time (the multiple units could travel at 140 km/h).
