The interior and exterior of the Kiha 58 Series 2 cars were engineered by industrial designer Eiji Mitooka and went into service in July 2006.
The train's name Aso 1962 derives from the fact that the Kiha 58-139 under construction was manufactured in 1962 (Showa 37).
It was in service until 2010 (2010), during which time it was used as a special train in various parts of Kyushu.
