The InterCity 125 high-speed trains are officially the fastest diesel trains in the world. Introduced by British Rail in 1976, they operated at speeds of 125 km/h on the Great Western Main Line and East Coast Main Line before being used on other routes as they became more widespread.
When originally built by BREL at Crewe Works, the InterCity 125 units, consisting of two Class 43 power cars and a number of Mk3 carriages, were considered diesel multiple units and were designated Class 253 for the Western Region and Class 254 for divided into the Eastern Region, since it was intended that the trains should run in fixed formation.
As the UK became more electrified, the use of the Class 43 was reduced as their services on the East Coast Mainline were no longer required. With the introduction of the Class 800 trains, the Class 43 has been pushed back into regional service, with Scotrail and GWR becoming the two largest operators of the range in 2022. Since the locomotives are considered to be the fastest diesel locomotives in the world, many examples have survived.
