In order to replace the outdated M 131.1 series railcars, the Czechoslovak State Railways purchased new two-axle diesel railcars with the series designation M 152.0. The vehicles delivered in series from 1975 were powered by a 155 kW six-cylinder in-line engine and reached a top speed of 80 km/h. There were 56 seats available in the passenger compartment.
