In order to replace the outdated class M 131.1 railcars, the Czechoslovak State Railways procured new two-axle diesel railcars with the series designation M 152.0. The vehicles delivered in series from 1975 were powered by a 155 kW six-cylinder in-line engine and reached a top speed of 80 km/h. 56 seats were available in the passenger compartment.
Over time, many color variants emerged. The variant with a beige lower third became established on the Czechoslovak State Railways in the 1980s. After the division of the CSD, the railcars, with and without sidecars, were also used on all branch lines of the Czech State Railways (CD).
