For the shunting of passenger and freight cars in train stations, the German Federal Railroad relied on smaller shunting locomotives early on. A further development of the Köf 11, with power transmission via cardan shafts and additional axle drives, was presented by Gmeinder in 1965. From this version, initially designated as Köf 12, 251 shunting locomotives were delivered to the Deutsche Bundesbahn as class 333. From the end of the 1980s onwards, most of the locomotives were equipped with radio remote controls in order to save personnel. These locomotives were known as the 335 series.
