From the mid-1950s, the German Federal Railway purchased a total of 942 locomotives of the V 60/V 60.1 series for light and medium-sized shunting services. The difference between the V 60 (260) and V 60.1 (261) series is the higher friction load of the BR 261. As part of a remotorization with Caterpillar engines from the mid-1990s, some machines were redesignated as the 363 series. After decommissioning, many examples were sent to private and company railways at home and abroad.
