According to the regulations within the RGW (Council for Mutual Economic Aid), numerous six-axle freight locomotives were delivered to many countries by the Soviet Union under the manufacturer designation M62. The supplier was the “October Revolution” locomotive factory in Lugansk, which was one of the largest works in the Soviet Union. The first prototypes appeared in 1964, and series delivery began in 1965. The locomotives with an output of 1470 kW reached a top speed of 100 km / h. By 1976, a total of 723 broad gauge locomotives had been delivered to the SZD.
