As the only nationwide civil defense and disaster control unit in Germany, the DRK relief train was indispensable from 1953 to 2007. Its sub-units included areas of the medical service, care service, nursing and nursing assistance service, technical service and the telecommunications service.
The DRK relief train worked both in cooperation with the local and regional disaster protection units and independently.
