The 38.2-3 series - The Saxon rolling wagon
At the beginning of the 20th century, the Saxon State Railways needed a powerful locomotive that could be used primarily in hilly areas for both passenger and freight train services. The Saxon Machine Factory, formerly Richard Hartmann in Chemnitz, was commissioned to develop and build such a locomotive. In the spring of 1910, the first machine of the XII H2 series was put into service. 159 locomotives were built by 1922, and another ten locomotives were added in 1927. Due to the good operating experience, the series was nicknamed the "Saxon rolling wagon". At the DRG, the XII H2 was assigned the series number 382-3. The main area of operation of the locomotives was always in Saxony. After the First World War, 25 locomotives went to France and after the Second World War, numerous machines went to Czechoslovakia. They were in regular service with the Reichsbahn in the GDR until the end of the 1960s.
The book gives a well-founded overview of the development history of the XII H2, describes its performance in operational service and the home of the locomotives of this series in the railway depots.
