In 2014, a first transport squadron was activated to operate the A400M Atlas, followed by a second in September 2021. This was the Escadron de Transport 4/61. The formation was temporarily deactivated when the predecessor C-160 Transall was handed over in August 2017 and was also considered the most decorated transport unit in the French Air Force due to its operations in Southeast Asia. With the delivery of the 18th A400M to the French Air Force, the new formation of the squadron was honored with this special livery and the red bull from its coat of arms.
