With five daily flights each between the Airbus factories, the fleet of the original Beluga, based on the A300, is reaching its limits. The new BelugaXL is based on the A330 and has a 30% higher capacity, allowing it to transport, for example, two A350 wings at the same time, compared to the single wing the original Beluga can carry. The first aircraft will take up operations in early 2020 and add desperately needed capacity to the Beluga fleet.
