The PC-7 is a two-seater turbo trainer which is used in the military field of basic training, especially in aerobatics and IFR instrument flight (so-called blind flight). The operation of the propeller turbine gives the trainee pilot initial experience for later use on aircraft such as the PC-21, Tiger F5E and F/A 18 Hornet. The PC-7 education and training aircraft are among the most powerful and modern aircraft in this category in the world. As early as 1981, the Swiss Air Force ordered 40 aircraft to replace the outdated P-2 and the somewhat underpowered P-3 models.
The PC-7 was introduced in 1982 and by 1983 all 40 aircraft had been delivered. More than 500 examples were produced at the Pilatus works in Stans and more than 20 air forces around the world now rely on the qualities of this aircraft.
